Security

Better Locks. Smarter Security.

Security is not a product you buy once. It is the sum of the doors, the windows, the hardware on them and the habits around keys — reviewed honestly, improved where it matters.

A mortice lock case and strike plate neatly fitted into the edge of a dark timber door, with installation tools laid out on a protective cloth.

What this covers

What we handle

Everything listed here is work we actually carry out. If your situation is not on the list, describe it when you call and we will tell you honestly whether it is ours.

Included

Entry door review

What is actually holding the main doors closed, and whether it still works as intended.

Included

Secondary access points

Rear doors, side gates, laundries, garages and windows — the parts nobody checks.

Included

Hardware upgrades

Fitting appropriate locks where the current arrangement is unsuitable or worn out.

Included

Key control

Knowing how many keys exist and who has them, then reducing that to a known list.

Included

Ongoing maintenance

Keeping locks turning freely so they are still working in five years.

An honest starting point

Most properties are not insecure in dramatic ways. They have one door that never quite locked, a window lock nobody can find the key for, and more keys in circulation than anyone remembers issuing.

Fixing those three things is unglamorous and genuinely useful. It is also considerably cheaper than the upgrade someone tries to sell you when the conversation opens with fear.

What we will not tell you

We will not quote crime statistics at you, suggest your suburb is dangerous, or imply that any lock makes a property completely secure. None of that is true and none of it helps you decide anything.

What we will do is describe what your current hardware does and does not do, and let you choose what is worth changing.

Step by step

Assess. Recommend. Install. Maintain.

A practical sequence rather than a sales process. You can stop after any step.

  1. Assess

Identify the current locking setup — what is fitted on each door and window, its condition, how it is used and how many keys are in circulation.

  2. Recommend

Identify practical improvements, ranked by what actually makes a difference, with the option of doing the important part now and the rest later.

  3. Install

Fit the appropriate hardware where that service is offered, prepared and aligned so it operates easily rather than needing force.

  4. Maintain

Keep the system working properly — locks serviced, alignment checked, keys accounted for, so nothing quietly stops being used.

Questions

Security — common questions

What does a security review involve?

Looking at the doors and windows you actually have, the hardware on them, its condition and how keys are managed, then explaining in plain terms what is working and what is not. It is a practical locksmith assessment, not a formal security certification.

Will better locks stop a break-in?

No lock makes a property impossible to enter, and we will not claim otherwise. Well-chosen hardware that is properly fitted makes a door harder and slower to defeat, which is a worthwhile difference — but it is one layer, not a guarantee.

Where is the best place to start?

Usually the doors you use daily, then the access points you never think about — a rear door, a side gate, a ground-floor window. Key control is often the cheapest improvement of all.

Do locks need maintenance?

They do. Locks are mechanical, and St Kilda adds salt air to the mix. A lock that is getting stiff is telling you something, and attending to it is far less disruptive than replacing it after it seizes.
