Replacement

Lock Replacement in St Kilda

Replacing a lock is worth doing once, properly. The right hardware for the door, fitted so it lines up and turns easily, with keys you can account for.

A mortice lock case and strike plate neatly fitted into the edge of a dark timber door, with installation tools laid out on a protective cloth.

What this covers

What we handle

Everything listed here is work we actually carry out. If your situation is not on the list, describe it when you call and we will tell you honestly whether it is ours.

Included

Front and rear entry doors

Replacement of failed or unsuitable entry hardware on the doors you use every day.

Included

Deadlocks

Fitting or replacing a deadlock where the current arrangement relies on a latch alone.

Included

After lost or stolen keys

Where rekeying is not appropriate, replacing the affected locks retires the missing key completely.

Included

End-of-life hardware

Locks that have been repaired before, seized, or are no longer supported by available parts.

Included

Consistent hardware across a property

Bringing a mix of accumulated locks back to one sensible, matched arrangement.

The fitting matters as much as the lock

Good hardware fitted into a badly prepared door still feels wrong. The mortice needs to be clean and square, the strike positioned so the bolt drops in without persuasion, and the door itself closing properly before the lock is judged.

That is why replacement usually includes checking the door, hinges and frame rather than simply swapping the metal.

Choosing what goes on the door

Selection is a practical conversation, not a catalogue. How the door is used, whether it is exposed to weather and salt air, whether a tenant or a rental agreement is involved, how many people need keys, and whether other doors should share the same key all shape the answer.

Where a property is rented or part of an owners corporation, we will also flag anything that is likely to need permission before it is changed.

What a new lock does and does not do

A well-chosen, well-fitted lock makes a door harder to defeat and easier to live with. It does not make a property impossible to enter, and we will not tell you otherwise.

Sensible security is layered: the entry doors, then the secondary doors and windows, then the habits around keys. A new front deadlock alongside an unlockable rear window is only half the job.

Questions

Lock replacement — common questions

When should a lock be replaced rather than repaired?

When internal components have failed, when spare parts are no longer available, when the lock has already been repaired and continues to give trouble, or when keys are unaccounted for and rekeying is not suitable for that hardware.

Can all the doors be given the same key?

Often yes, where the locks are compatible. Keying doors alike reduces the number of keys you carry, and it is usually easiest to arrange at the point of replacement.

I rent my apartment. Can I have the locks replaced?

Changes to locks in a rental normally need the owner or managing agent involved, and body corporate rules may apply to common-property doors. Tell us the situation when you call and we will explain what is usually required.
